— a puzzle depends on telling I from l from 1.

outline above the name, and the title page prints a map of the country with
this book's states picked out.
Book settings
A puzzle drawn from a pool with no shared subject arrives
with no heading, so in a mixed book some pages would carry one and some
would not. This fills those pages only; a puzzle that already has a
heading keeps it. It is a label you are choosing, not one read off the
words — so it should be true of the section, like "Miscellaneous".
Should match the cover and the KDP Author field. The imprint stays on the copyright page.
Off draws a rule between grid and bank instead. A run generated after this
setting existed carries its own answer and that one wins — this is the default for
older runs. Solution grids keep their border either way: they carry no bank, so there is
nothing for a rule to divide.
Printed above the title, smaller, as a series line. This is the
page only — KDP’s own series fields are set in the listing and are what
actually link the books together on the store.
Print-on-demand has no fixed print run, so leave this empty for a first release. Use it only for a genuine revision, e.g. “Second edition, revised and expanded”.
Printed under the rights notice, wrapped to the column at
the book's text size. Empty is the default and is correct for a vocabulary
book — a source note describes where the CONTENT came from, so
Census wording in a Hodgepodge volume is simply false. It used to be the
default here and rode into every book that did not clear it.

Falls on the first right-hand page after the copyright. The direction arrows are
read off the finished puzzles, not drawn from a template — a book generated without
reversals shows four arrows, not eight. A diagram that promises directions the grids do not
contain is the kind of thing a reader notices on puzzle three.
A “Which print size?” block at the foot of the copyright page: the address in
bold and, if ticked, a 1.5in code beside it. The copyright page is inside every Look Inside and
has room at every type size — the rights notice is the one text allowed to step down, so it
gives way to the block; the How to Play page cannot hold a code above 20pt without covering
the arrows. Scan a printed proof before a book ships with a code.
One paragraph. Blank uses the default.
Prints the address itself at the foot of the How to Play page.
The printed address matters more than a code for this readership — many will not
scan one. A QR in a book is permanent, so point it at a path you control and can redirect,
never straight at a form provider. The encoder's format word was written mirrored until 2026-09-14 — the reason no phone would read it (§83). Fixed; its output now decodes under a reader validated against four commercially generated codes (qrfixture-check.js). Still off by default: scan a printed proof with a phone before a book ships with it. Max 42 characters.

This is the only word in the book printed with no subject heading over it, so it is
not taken from the puzzle list — a word that reads clean under
On the Water can read very differently alone on the front page. The line is omitted
entirely if the book holds no multi-word entries.
